Title: ESS/MB3 & the means of Interfacing with solenoid actuated mist coolant
Post by: Lucid_moments on June 25, 2024, 08:24:26 AM
Hi guys,
Summer is here

I have installed mist coolant for the recent upgrade to accomodate metal work, but it is still manually engaged. Early days and all.
The equipment:
ESS motion card w/MB3 breakout,
12VDC solenoid,
Coil draws 6.5W (0.5A)
10A 12VDC switching PSU.
The relays on the MB3 look like the easiest choice.
The manual states current max is 24W at 12VDC for the mechanical relays.

My CAM software generates the M codes M7 and M9.

Would like your take on the matter.

Regards,
Chris

so what are you asking for? ???

Thanks for taking the time.
My lack of knowledge of what the relays on the MB3 are capable  of for continuous duty is why I posted. I am trying to determine before I commit, the parts required as I am ordering the last of the stragglers that are unaccounted for.
I am upgrading my Z axis in all aspects, new inductive limits switches, closed loop steppers and drivers, ATC 3.5kW BT30 (to finally address tool setting once and for blessed all), all wiring that isn't shielded, lots more.
So my grey area is all about the possible need to create a remote enclosure that houses the pneumatic actuators, all o f which  are 12VDC.
I am expecting that I will only need to toggle the air, and that the venturi  based mist valve body will be fine with a single input.

So ultimately, does one anticipate problems with a simple and direct actuation of the 12VDC solenoid for extended toolpaths using the on board relays of the MB3.

Cheers

Chris

I would switch a solid state relay with the MB3 relay a Crydom or similar DC/DC.

I would switch a solid state relay with the MB3 relay a Crydom or similar DC/DC.

I had a look at Digikey line up and much choice there.
A relay with opto-coupling isolation removes back EMF issues I trust. Or diode.

I have learned much more in the interim, thanks.
