Title: First Litho LED Frame
Post by: budman68 on November 19, 2012, 02:09:07 PM
Just thought I'd share an Xmas gift I just finished for my wife. It's a picture of our daughter (Alicia Mae) when she was a baby (21 years ago last month!!!). The litho was done using DeskProto as I already own it  :| and it is my first, so please be kind

The black walnut frame was all done using VCarve Pro, and it's about  5/8ths X 5-3/8ths X 5-7/8ths. I used those 12V LEDs on a reel that you usually see folks using for these. I wired it up to a 5.5mm barrel pigtail connector to accept a 12V power supply wall wart. I actually put a 1/16th piece of lexan in front as I didn't like the idea of the litho being exposed to collect dust and such. It also gives it a bit more depth as well.

I also wanted this to be a "stand-alone" type picture frame so I used a 5 X 7 picture stand from a picture frame we had being unused. I angled the bottom of the frame to match so it would sit nice and firmly.

Sorry about my pics as these are quite a pain to take pictures of. Also, on the animated GIF picture, wait for it to completely load so you can see the lit version as well!

Thanks for looking,
Dave

NICE job, Now a question. If you flip the engraving around so the smooth side is OUT does the image look the same with the light on ?

Just curious, (;-) TP

Thank you Terry, and no, it's VERY blurry, but I bet for the right kind of picture, it might actually look nice if it didn't require seeing much detail.

Thanks Brett!

Nice job I am sure the wife will love it. Is that Corian? I did a litho of 1 of my children early in my mills assembly. It was so odd til it was back lit. I remember my BobCad instructor, Sorin having a small litho of his daughter he carried. He handed it out in class proudly, his daughter looked terrible in the carving until you held it to the light. We laughed so hard as everyone was so quiet, unsure of how to address his daughters appearance. She was quite attractive once back lit. LOL

lol! Yep, the images look pretty scary until the true subject comes to life when lit up. I've actually been looking for small 2- way mirror (in plastic so I can cut it without problems) so I can mount it in front of the carved piece. This way it's just a mirror until lit up.

Although, I must admit, part of the interest in these lithophanes is indeed the odd looking carving.  ;)

Thanks all for the kind words-

Happy Thanksgiving!

Nice job Dave. The litho's are always interesting since you just don't see them around much. I still have the one of my Husky
that a member made for me. The one done in white Corian was much better than than the one done in a light tan color.
