Title: which software package to purchase
Post by: hmoore01 on February 02, 2012, 09:30:27 AM
Hello to all
This is my first post so please be understanding
I am brand new to cnc
I an converting a Bridgeport series 1, boss5,to PMDX/ GECKO/ Mach3
I have no clue how to write G code
However i can write ladder logic for most PLCs out there
I will be finishing the wiring and control setup soon
My question is what software do i need and what license do i need to purchase
I plan to use the mill for making brackets and medium size  parts
Mostly 3 axes x/y/z   i hope to be able soon to use all 4 and make large screws (5"OD 10" pitch) from uhmw
what are your thoughts
Thanks
Harry

My personal ideia:

Learn a little GCode, and program by hand. At the end, if the parts are not very complex, the machine will act exactly as you want to and how you expect to. You are making an investment on yourself rather on the software. I normally draw what I want on a 2D program (there are free ones all over the internet) and make my movements with them.
If the parts are very complex, then you would need a good software, that could cost more than the machine.
Never less a CAM software will eventually need some changes before sending to the machine, so at the end you will need to know Gcode.

You should look here http://www.vectric.com/.
You will not find a easier to use, reasonably priced,
great support software around.
I would suggest to purchase CNC Programming Handbook
by Peter Smid.
These will get you started. You will stumble and fall but
we are all here to help you.

Try this free program http://www.gsimple.gr/
It is relatively quick / easy to learn and will teach you all the basics for free.

Once you are making stuff then you can start looking around.
