Title: Covnerting Points into a Surface
Post by: Paul F on December 07, 2006, 10:58:24 PM
Hello All,
I am wondering what a good software would be to convert the "Point Cloud" generated from probing, into a usable surface.
Thanks in advance,
Paul

Oops,
I guess spell check doesn't check the topic.
Anyone doing digitizing?
Paul

Sorry i haven't had to deal with this yet.  I did a google search "point cloud to surface" and it came up with a bunch of stuff. It is late and i don't have the energy to do any more digging..

Good luck, let us know what you find.

Chad

Chad,
Thanks for your reply and taking the time to "google it", I have found plenty by searching also but was wondering what others here might be using and liked or didn't like.

Hi Paul,

While I am by no means experienced in point clouds I have captured a few from both mach2 and mach3. I use Rhino 3d to import the txt file and then save it as a native Rhino 3dm file. Then the work starts. There are packages out there that can make a surface directly from the points by triangulation into a .stl mesh. In my experience and with my dated computer stl's are many times too heavy for my graphics and processor. Let me know if I can help.
