Post by: Hood on June 05, 2011, 07:16:55 PM
Just wondering if lathe threading is  done yet as I cant really find an answer in searching the forum.

Seems that way Rich, shame really as I am going to look at a Beaver TC15 lathe today and have a Galil thats been sitting here doing nothing for a couple of years.

Hi, can any of you explain in simple terms what would be the advantage of using a Galil (or similar) controller instead of just connecting two servo drives commanded by step/dir signals directly  to a computer running Mach? Is there a significant performance improvement to be obtained by using one of these controllers. I have a future project and would like to consider all options.

Thanks,

Jorge

It allows you to use analogue amps rather than having to fit Step/Dir drives. So if the lathe already has the analogue amps and I already have a Galil then it would be a cheap/easy retrofit.

Lathe threading is getting closer. I have it working offline using strictly Galil code. Now it needs to be integrated into the Galil plug in. I can't do this alone and need Smurph or Brian to free up some time to help me. Both are working straight out at the moment. We are planning to get together in a few weeks to try and get some of these things ironed out. Maybe it will be ready by the fall. There are several other goodies coming with the next release that will make use with a lathe much better.

I need it too, so there is some urgency to this.

Sounds good :)  Thanks for the update.

BTW is spindle possible with +/-10v, I think I read it was but just confirming.

Hood,
Yes the spindle can be: servo, +/- 10v, or 0 - 10v, encoder or not, selectable on the axis config page of the plugin. For non servo spindle, there may be some alterations needed to the macros, but they will be documented in the plugin PDF manual.

Sounds good, now I just need to see if I get the lathe and give Brian a kick in the bollocks if I do ;D

Keep the beaver wither the controller it has on will work great for all the turning functions including threading and css. Presume it's on Fanuc6T a great control one  of the best Fanuc ever made or is it Siemens?

Its a Siemens I believe but afraid there is not much left of the control side  anyway or rather if I was buying what is left would not be in the deal. I have decided not to go for the lathe anyway  I dont have much room in the workshop so ended up buying a toy one (Conect 121) to sit along side the Computurn.

That's a shame hood I have spare motors and drives for these. They are very well built as well. The Fanuc versions still had the Siemens back ends on. It's possible to buy a Fanuc 6t front end off eBay and get a set of parameters and a set of eproms if they are missing . If it's the machine I'm thinking of it was in great condition.  John

Unlikely its the machine you know of , its a friend of mine that has it. He has quite a few machines with the same control/motors so I think it has been robbed through time to keep others running. All of the amps are out of it f I recall and most motors are also off of it. I just fancied it to mess about with, dont really need it for the line of work I am in but I do enjoy doing retrofits.
Wouldnt mind getting the turret from it for my Computurn but thats unlikely. I did recently buy a 12 pos VDI turret on eBay but the guy refused to sell it to me as he wanted £2000 even though he listed it for £99 starting bid.

If it belongs to Mark I saw it on Ebay way back before he bought it  ;D Think it's a TC10 if I remember like this one

http://www.sorted-uk.com/beaverlathe.html

Check the slides on the X axis..they don't make them like that anymore.

Mark said it was a TC15 but I wouldnt know one way or another. No Tailstock was a bit of a downside for me  but it was lack of room that was the killer, I hardly have room for the Conect 121 I got instead ;D
