Title: External Digital Readout as Absolute Reference when using Stepper Motors
Post by: Trueheart on December 10, 2010, 11:03:57 AM
Can an external Mitutoyo digital readout be used to feedback an absolute XYZ coordinate system to Mach 3 to correct for stepper motor errors?

Anythings possible but the answer is really no because Mach is not intended to be used as a closed loop system. If a stepper error occurs the job could be well be spoiled so the system should be constructed so there are no errors to correct.

If a stepper loses position, it's because it doesn't have enough power. If it doesn't have enough power to maintain position, how is it going to have enouigh power to make the correction.

The simple answer is use the right size steppers for the job, or only go as fast as the steppers are capable of.
