Title: CAD /CAM Software at a student price
Post by: Quad on May 23, 2009, 01:20:44 PM
So your a MACH, home CNCer and you'd love to be able to have the functionality of a $4,000 CAD/CAM program, but you'll never recoupe that sort of cost, so you don't get the full potential from your machine.  If you were offered the program at the student discount price would it be more obtainable?

Would you add your name to an email to Mecsoft (or other software manufacturer), requesting a discount for the 'hobby' user?

Are you prepared to promote the software and mention them in your Youtube video?

Depends on the discount. What's the new price?

It's free, other than your time to register.  Here's the language from the Autodesk Legal Terms of Service, "If your entitlement has been designated as “Startup,” You may use the service if You are (a) a company, startup, or home-based business that generates less than $100,000 (or equivalent in other currency) per year from the total sale of goods or services, or (b) an individual using the service for personal non-commercial projects, hobbies, or personal learning."

I've been a registered user for three years.

It's subscription based. $300 year for the standard version, $1500/year for the Ultimate version.

True if you are a commercial enterprise.

Having followed Autodesk for over 30 years don't be surprised what could happen in the future.

I recently spoke to someone that used to be part of the Fusion 360 team, and asked him about this. I was told that the intent is to provide Fusion free to hobbyists, indefinitely. Take that for what it's worth.
And having said that, when Autodesk offered an option (a few years ago) to lock into Fusion Ultimate for $300/year for life, I took them up on it, just in case at some point, it wouldnt be free.
