General Mach Discussion / Re: Current list of G & M Codes for Lathe

Don't think such a thing exists. Like Hood said, the Turn manual is the closest thing, but it doesn't mention some codes - like the CSS for instance.

I don't have any experience with PWM, but 500mV and 250mV as signals?! If this is the way it's meant to be it's not good. Very prone to noise.

SmoothStepper USB / Re: Help a Smoothstepper Noob - no outputs?

Hi,

How are you testing the outputs?

I haven't touched any jumpers on my SS and it works fine.

Show"N"Tell ( Your Machines) / Re: CNC CONVERSION - 6" ATLAS LATHE

The ball screw is not perfectly straight so when it turns you are putting a radial load into the bearings. I believe I can reduce required torque by adjusting the bearing mounted at the tail end of the lathe. That requires shimming the mounting plate and just takes some time fooling with it.

Rich,

That is not good. If the screw is not perfectly straight it also means that the ball nut experiences radial loads, and that is really bad. Ball nuts are NOT designed to take radial forces. Subjecting them to this kind of load dramatically increases the wear and rapidly shortens their life.

As Jeff has said, the steppers are the old round frame style. May well be they are variable reluctance type requiring high voltage - like most of the older ones. Only way to find out (considering you don't have any specs of the steppers) is actually testing them with the G540 I guess. You'll easily see if they are not suitable - no sufficient speed, no torque.

Hi Rich,

A nice looking machine is starting to show up there :)

Thanks for all the updates and photos throughout the process - almost like a DIY manual ;)

Looks like the mechanical part is almost done... we'll see it coming alive soon :)

General Mach Discussion / Re: NSK, Gecko, Mach3 questions

Dan,

OK, so I understand the NSK is a VFD that takes analogue 0-10V.

As far as I know, the PWM signal is output to the step pin, so I'd suggest disabling the direction pin. If it doesn't help I would double check the connections are correct.

Now that looks much better :) . Would love to see it cutting that mustang at this speed.

Thanks for showing.

Hi Dan,

What is the NSK E2550 and what are you trying to do with it? And how does the G540 relate to this?

Hi Haydn,

Great job!

WOW... 0.1mm accuracy with rack and pinion system!! Would have never thought it could be so accurate.

That spindle is quit indeed... even the steppers make more noise ;)
