Title: 2% jog (.001) Metric on Axis A & B not accurate
Post by: dane5547 on December 05, 2022, 01:50:25 PM
I recently purchased a (Mach3 v 3.043)5 axis ChinaCNCzone machine with WHB04B-6 4 Axis 6 Axis USB Mach3 Wireless Handwheel Controller Remote Hand Control CNC Handwheel. attached. The problem is that the 2%(.001) jog doesn't seem to work very well on the A and B axis.
I would expect that on the 2% scale every click of the wheel should move the B level .001 mm. I can move the wheel several clicks before the B axis actually moves. When it does move it jumps 5-10 thousands. It's making the zeroing of these axis extremely difficult. Is there something I've set up in the tuning of the axis of Mach3 wrong?

Hi,
I suspect that your steppers have microstepping regime of 8 microsteps per full step or more.
When you click the MPG Mach will issue say one or two steps but the steppers will not move until four, five or six steps have accumulated.
This is a common problem with steppers, you might think that if you have 1600 steps per rev if Mach issues one step it will move 1/1600 of a rev,
but not so. This is because the differential torque between micro steps diminishes very rapidly beyond half stepping.

The practical maximum resolution of a two phase stepper is 400 steps/rev (or half stepping) irrespective of the microstepping regime.

Thanks Craig.
I'm sorry but I'm still a bit confused. Does this carry over to a g-code command? i.e., X-5.001? Will it move -5.001 mm or will it jump say 5.004?
Or...is this peculiar to the handwheel jogging only? Which I expect is true.
I plead naivety because I'm rather new to all this.

Is there anyone who has experience with one of these  ChinaCNCZone Mach3 usb 6040 5axis machines and If so is there a group specifically for said machines?
