Title: 3D carving
Post by: sparkyengle on November 12, 2010, 01:46:56 PM
I know this doesn't relate to Mach, but does anyone know what is the best bit for V-carving. I have a home built router I cut wood on and am not sure what is the best bit to use for detail. My router only has a 1/4" collete. Any suggestions on where to buy cheap ones at?

Sparky, the problem with buying cheap V bits, is that the point of the V bit is not really a true "point" and your cuttings will not turn out correctly. I use the CMT Lazer V Bits and have been very happy with them. I usually wait until they go on sale  ;D

Search amazon for: cmt bit V 1/4

They are a "little"costly, but in the end, they last and you'll be very happy with the quality.

A note on what is best as far as what angle, depends on the application you're doing. What software are you using?

I am using artcam Pro 9. I am afraid I am not very fluent with it yet. It looks like it can do quite a few things!

I see, unfortunately I know nothing about their software, but I'm sure they have a great and helpful forum, no?
