General Mach Discussion / My First Mill and first CNC upgrade
« on: February 10, 2009, 06:08:09 PM »
I am about to buy a Milling Machine, I have selected which one I want however due to its lack of CNC I plan to convert it almost immediately.

It is an Eastern Mill so I was planning to replace the leadscrews for ball screws and then fit ... servo motors on each axis.

Two questions:

1)  I am only looking at Servos due to our 'workshop guy' at work recomending them over steppermotors...is there a real gain?

2) Can mach3 controll Servos?  If not what would be a good set of stepper motors? (I am in the UK)

Thanks,

Andy

Thanks Hood, I will give it a go and let you know the results.

It works...I have threads...I have not tested them yet however they look like threads and good ones at that!

I just need to make a metal disk rather than use a bit of card board.

Thanks,

Andy

p.s multi start threads need indexing...I will have to wait for that.

Thanks Hood, will give it a go an let you all know the results.  I imagin that multistart will need indexing some how...

Thanks,

Thanks Hood it is that exact switch.

I will give it a go this weekend...cant wait!

I have ordered a 60 degree threading tool with carbide replacement tips, will this do variable pitches? I would like to do small threading pitches such as 0.7mm and 1.5mm.

Last question is can I do multi start threads? with this system?

Hi,

I am planning to fit an encoder (optical) to my sherline and using a slotted disk to detect what speed I am going at.

I have little electronics experiance and thefore have asked a friend to help me!

He would like to know what pin to connect the encoder to on the parallel port?

I will get this machine threading eventually.....

Thanks,

Andy

p.s A big thanks to hood for recomending and showing me this method.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Syil C6 Lathe thread?
« on: October 05, 2008, 04:15:39 PM »
Hi,

I have found various optical sensors however connecting them to Mach is somthing I know nothing about.  I currently have a mach setup with a sherline lathe,  if I could get that to screw thread that would be great.  I did find a company selling servo versions of the sherline, however I would have to buy the whole lathe again.  Which is why I was looking at the syil.

If I had an optical sensor on my current sherline cnc lathe hooked up to Mach, would that thread?

If yes then where should I start looking for an optical sensor that can talk to mach?

Thanks,

Andy

Thanks Hood,

Should I just email that to the supplier and ask if this is the case?  Does anyone else own this lathe and know if it can thread?

Thanks,

Andy

Can the Syil C6 lathe thread under CNC?  Will it work with Mach 3?

Thanks,

General Mach Discussion / Re: Arc problem ?

Rich,

You are a genius,  the code is generated by an old copy of oneCNC.

However it has worked.  What does that "reversed arcs in front post" checkbox do?

Thank you,

Andy
