Trying to configure the steps per unit (mm) on my Taig CNC with Stepmaster 4 axis controller (model SOP-2 ver 1.2)
The screws are 1/2" x 20TPI
Steppers are Sure step 276 oz 2.8A 1.8degree step (200 steps) 1/8th step microstepping
Units in Mach 3 are mm
To work out the steps per unit = steps per revolution of stepper motor * TPI of leadscew
Any ideas?

20 TPI = 1/20 = 0.05inch pitch 0.05 x 25.4 = 1.27mm pitch
so
200 steps per rev x 8 micro steps = 1,600 steps per rev
1 rev = 1.27mm so 1,600/1.27 = 1259.84252 steps per mm.

Can I configure the steps per unit in English measurements but then use Mach 3 to produce parts from metric drawings?
If I round up units per step I'm going to be a little inaccurate over the length of the bed.

You don't have to round up, just enter 5 decimal places. You won't be able to measure any innacuracies.
It is possible to configure the machine in inches and run metric g-code using G21 (I think), but it's not the preferred method.

You can go to 5 or 6 decimal places I would think.
You can also set up in Imperial units and run metric code by having a G21 in the code if you wish.
In reality however if you think about it, the taig has screws which likely are no where as precise as the small rounding error you are talking about, I have class 5 precision ground ballscrews on my mill and they are something like 0.018mm/300mm.

Another way would be two profiles, one imperial and one metric

dont think that would help in this case as the OP is wanting to set the native units as Imperial and work in metric for code. As said however the reason for wanting to do this is probably misguided as the rounding error of setting the imperial screws as metric units will be negligible and the screws will probably have 100 times any rounding error if not more.

can you figure this in inch !!! i have same set up...running test, shows pulsing too fast !!

how is this figured...
my test comes up "pulsing too fast....and where in Mach3 do I input these #rs ???

If you are running the driver test with Mach open then you will get that message, if Mach is shut down when you are running it then your computer has problems pulsing.

when moving X- 16.0000...it (X) moves one inch.....how to re-configure !??? I have above system , but in inches......

If your system specs are the same as the OP posted then it would be
200 x 8 x 20 =32,000 steps per unit.

Trying to set up steps. Units set to inches. If I put in 1" it moves about 1/20. If I put in 20 it moves one inch? Yes I am a moron. Any info. Appreciated.
