what is the best strategy to entre this field (CNC) .
- Purchase CNC Programming Handbook by Smid - study it
- Read / study the Mach Mill manuals

There is no shortcut to any of this and one just needs to go through the learning curve which continues forever.

Lazycam is an importer of a dxf file. It is not and should not be used as a drawing program.

There is a lot of software out there these days. You have Cad, Cam, combination Cad/Cam. There is 2d and 3d. They all do the same thing to varying degrees and the software prices vary greatly. Some are geared towards being creative while others are more conventional in their interface to provide a design.

You mention LazyCam but I wouldn't recommmend it.  You need to provide a properly prepared drawing for it and
is basicaly a 2d drawing "importer" to provide 2d Gcode to machine the piece. Cambam has CAD and is more flexible
for a low price around $150. Tormach provides software for scanning a sketch via a usb camera for Gcode generation but you can do the same using Copycat and backplot the code for use by CAD.

I think the user interface is very important and is very subjective. What one finds acceptable in use can be very irriatating in use for another.

Free stuff is usualy lacking in some manner, of course you don't find out until you use it and it dosen't provide what you want. What you want to do today may not be what you want in the future. IE; so you provide an outline of the glasses for cutout but you really may want to have a rendered 3d pic of them for show. That quickly changes want you will need.

You don't want to go through learning  curves and keep trying software. You also don't want something of the day that is not supported in the future. So cheap may not be cheap in the long run.

Lots of options FWIW,

Have you considered making your owne?
Curious........What accuracy are you interested in?

Been a few years since the start of it, but, an unfinished screen set without some new interface and additions dosen't seem to make sense paying for it.
Just my honest thoughts so don't take it personal. If your going to charge for it then it has to be worth it to the user.

The original intent, way back whenever, was to provide an improved screen set for the lathe. That effort went by the way side and then you chose to
to go on your owne. As you know it takes a lot of work and time.
If it is yours then you get all that goes with it. If you share it, maybe it will develop more, maybe it will die....hard to tell.

As far as myself, I purchased Dolphin for the lathe after waiting years for something to come about and still use a slightly  modfied screen set.

Anyone here able to write macros and such that they would like to continue the project as a joint effort?
And then what, sell it?

General Mach Discussion / Re: Losing Pulses at lower accelerations
« on: April 08, 2013, 06:30:49 AM »
10K,
You never answred my question which was , "What do you want to do?"
Seems like you want to increase you max velocity?

First find your approx Max velocity.
Run the driver test and find the max Kernal Speed, but would suggest you just start with 25Khz.
Set your max velocity for say 10 ipm with an acceleration of say 2. Now double the velocity ie, 10, 20, 40, 80, 160 ad see where the axis skips.
Lets say it skipped at 80 ipm, then set the velocity at 60 and see if it skips, if it dosen't, now start increasing the accel and find where it skips, lets say it
skips at 60 ipm and accel of 10. Now lower the velocity to 30 to 40 % of max and retest. Above  will quickly get you in the ballpark.

Please understand that relibalility of is more important than speed. You don't want the system to skip or have problems when maching.

In general you need to understand the following:
- A stepper motors torque decreases as speed increases. Thus high motor speed and no torque is rather useless. What you want is power which
  is torque x speed.

- The SYSTEM must be capable of what you want to do, there are comprimises that will need to be made, speed / acceleration / accuracy /
power and additionaly,  adequate drive, power supply, mechanics of the axis, etc. Don't forget that the computer / external motion device must have the
ability to deliver the pulse signal to the drive.

- Thus your have a the software that controls the motion, a computer that outputs the instructions, a drive that delivers the pulse train, the ,mechanics of
the axis, the motor that needs to be able to respond. That is the "SYSTEM". The components are all interlinked and and the system needs to be adequte
for what you want to do.  Changes to any part of the system can affect the axis motion.

- And in the end what really matters that the system is realiable and accurate enough to do what you want to do.

SO what do you want to do?

Nick,
Post the dxf file.
Save the file as a version 12 DXF and it should be a 2d file.

I would suggest that if you want to learn Gcode buy Smid's Programming Handbook and study it.
