Hi:
Can you post a higher resolution picture, I keep losing count due to pixelation of the image. I keep losing count at about
673.. I know there must be more than that..
LOL. :-)

Hi, the correct number is 2,746,200 i just finnished counting! cul brian f.

Hmmmmm.......
Based on the size of the cutter, angle of the light, material being cut, noise coefficient of the influx jitter, and local weather (here not there), I'll say: 2,134,618.

Hello !!!

Well lets see. on: May 14, 2007, 06:46:20 pm the moon was about to rise giving max magnetic pull at 11:05 pm. The Earth's diameter is about 12,750 km, and the distance from the Earth to the Moon is about 385,000 km.. So its obvious 2,883,888 chips.

2,608,713 did not count the ones on the floor....gabriel

Ok Brett,
Did somebody actualy count these or is this a random number? My guess is 2,867,648
-
The answer is obviously 2,411,499
1) Mach is 340.29 meters/sec
2) Mach3 then is 1,020.87 meters/sec
3) IPM is used a lot in CNC. Mach3 is 2,411,499 IPM
My answer doesn't count because I used a calculator.

definitely 2,743,928.... definitely definitely 2,743,928 (Rain man)

How about 2,894,576 ? Type a 2, mash the number pad and delete everything beyond seven figures.

Will try again tomorrow.
All your other posts have been deleted. The rules clearly state one entry per person. The first answer given by an entrant will be the only entry.Benny
Sorry i did not read the rules good.
So hereby my only and the only good answer 2.997.874 (did not count the broken chips)

mmmmmmmmmmm wonder who counted them in the first place? I know it couldn't have been you Brett, you cant count past 231/2, by that time you have run out of fingers and toes :D

Hi All.
Considering this was my mess I probably am disqualified from guessing but I will share some info that might help narrow things down a little.
I used a 2 flute high helix solid carbide end-mill.
The spindle speed was 5700 rpm.
The cut speed average was 24 ipm.
The stock started out at 2" x 2" x 3.5" - 6061 about 70% was removed.
The rough down was .250 depth of cut with .1 step over.
This was the 8th part cut that day.
It was 95 degrees in the shop.
The mill was controlled with a Grex and Mach.
I was wearing shorts and was probably drinking beer by then.
It filled a 20 gallon shop vac bag about 3/4 the way up. And it took me many hours to clean the mill.
Hope that helps!!
Oh and here is another pic that will make it easier to count the chips on the floor ;)
Chad
-
Hi how about 2999999
-
Chad,
What is the diameter of the 20 gallon vacuum?
I might have to recalculate my formula.

If someone pays me $550 bucks I'll tell them how many chips there are.

I think it is:

2,225,847

My guess is 2,369,148 - but as with most things these days, according to my wife, I've probably got it wrong again!

LOL, all of you are cracking me up. This is fun.
Chad, I bet you had no idea what a mess you were making. ;D

Hi Guys
I just removed a virus file that was named A0093027.exe. I haven't had a virus in a long time so it must be a sign. I'm going to win! I'm sure of it! I hope I win. If I don't win I'll never own a G-Rex. 1 in a million chance. Hmmm, pretty long odds. Wonder if I can haggle Benny down to 20 bucks for the answer. I've spent way too much money on hobby CNC and I've been put on wifey credit hold so this is my only hope. Please god please!!!
I'll go with 2,093,027
Cheers

Hi all,
Just my two cents. 2,501,786 no, maybe 2,701,678no maybe 2,500,076
-
Hi,
My guess.. 2,999,999
-
I'm thinkin'............ 2,500,000 +/- 1
Tim
-
Hmmmm.
It's obviously larger than an buttload....
...but seems smaller than an a$$load......
My guess is that it's a $hitload
-
Think my guess would have to be 2,567,890
-
Assuming a 50% duty cycle and a full 8 hour day, 2,736,000!
-
2218782 Can't win if you don't play (from a cheesy Florida lottery billboard)
-
OKl I'll play - having subjected the clues given so far to a bit of dimensional analysis, the spread sheet says that a crucial piece of info is missing... Please provide a hint re the diameter of the cutter used and I will have the magic formulas provide THE answer as my entry.
Dave
-
OK - I'll play.
I've carefully considered the clues given so far; subjected them to a bit of dimensional analysis and constructed a modelling spread sheet... alas, two crucial piece of info are still needed....
1) what diameter cutter was used?
2) I also need to know what type of shoe soles you were wearing and how many times you left the area during the job (to subtract out the chips removed via this process).
With these missing pieces I can complete the variables of the formula (and use some rational estimations of finish vs roughing feed/speed ratios), and I will have the magic model provide my answer for entry.
Dave
-
Hi Guys
You just as well quick i think I got it 2,299,371 But again I could be wrong that would be the first time ha ha ah aha
-
My very un-scientific answer is 2,851,769 LMK
-
Well, I blew up the photo and every pixel has one chip in it. At 800 x 600 resolution that would only be 480,000 chips ;~)....
But my best actual guess is 2,543,496.1478543365232, to be more accurate.... Just a hunch....
Steve
-
Can't win if you don't register and guess, so:
2,007,529
Needed that 6 so 2,007,529
-
i made a mistake at 2,195,644 but i think it should be 2,206,457. :'(
but at the new count i've got it!
2 + secons quater(2) +day(06 + month(4) + year(57) thats my birthay and also the amount of chips!! ;D
Best Regards,
Christian
-
Hi All,
If the figure is between 2 000 000 and 3 000 000 then it's got to be 2 500 000.
Keep my fingers crossed.
Greg ??? ??? ???
-
2,607,770
-
Well, I hate to be a sadist, but I'll go for a free anything... My estimation would be 2,613,497 chips. I'll take my prize now thanks!
-
Obviously 2,718,281.828
-
Considering feed, spindle speed and size of part remaining.... 2305100
-
If I was a master of wit and repartee I would post a very clever comment.
But I'm not so.....2,758,686
-
Well, given the air temp in the shop, the gravitational pull on the machine, plus the fluctuation in dirty current. I'd have to guess the amount of chips at 2,918,763. This is also taking into fact that the muffler bearings and the watchamacullat were fuctioning properly.
Qoute: Have fun, live everday like it is your last, and remember: You'll never see a U-Haul behind any hearse.
-
OK Ben, the correct answer is 2,221,164 chips, I take cash or cheques, send me the money pronto...
Splint
-
2,431,111 to be exact!
Bob
-
My Grandmother says it looks like the dandruff from her old man and reckons it was 2.3 Kilograms worth. or about 2,421,567 pieces.
So that's my guess. 2,421,567
PS. what was the chip load, spindle speed, feed rate and time of the cut?
Rich
-
Well the majority of people are voting above 2,500,000.
90% of people think that they are right 70% of the time when deciding a point with any other person, and we know that actually only 50% of the people can be right, so therefore 60% of the people who voted so far are too high, and there's a 60% chance that its below 2,500,000.
Now when we say 'between' 2,000,000 and 3,000,000 is that inclusive or exclusive, because my count could be out by a factor of '1' and someone else could win if we're not sure?
So lets say its 'inclusive'. That gives us a range of +- 250,000, which means I'm already 50% more likely to be right that anyone else! ;D
Soooo.....its spelled 'g-rex' .......... g is the 7th letter in the alphabet, and the symbol '-' is 12 buttons from the left on my keyboard. 'r' is the 18th letter in the alphabet, 'e' is 5th, and x is the 24th letter in the alphabet.
So thats 7 x 12 = 84 ...... x 18 = 1512 ..... x 5 = 7560 ..... x 24 = 181,440
This is post number 53, so breaking that down it's '5' and '3'
so 181,440 x 5 = 907,200
and x 3 = 2,721,600
Using our original logic, we know that we're probably out by 500,000....... so 2,721,600 - 500,000 = 2,221,600 which is withing our range of probability of 500,000. :P
My 'Guess' is 2,221,600
-
Oh no baccu! You posted while I was typing and made my previous post number 54 instead of 53.....this has screwed up all of my calculations....guess it's up to luck now.... :D

I can't tell you where it is placed but you must use 6 to win this race.
Brett
-
Hmmmm...... maybe 2,000,006
-
Well I just spent the last half hour adding up all the entries and finding the average and it was wrong ! then I computed all the feeds and speeds with the mass removed at two flutes per 24ipm but since they were'nt being productive with such a light chipload ! that calculation was obviously wrong too ! So .... 2 plus hint plus hint = 2,673,600 just has to be the correct answer ! Almost forgot "Thanks Benny" the checks on its way !
AHA ! the task is impossible ! 1) stated find exact number of chips in photo ! 2) could only be done with a mathmatical calc 3) calc at best would only be an estimation 4) calc would be for total of all chips absolute except that calc would include time cutter was entering or leaving matr'l leaving answer eroneous 5) The only answer that would be even remotely possible is the one that has been selected and settled upon as "The correct answer" 6) That means that we are not trying to guess the number of chips in photo but the answer that has been selected and aggreed upon ! 7) Benny ! I had to cancell the check !
So my guess for the agreed upon winning number would have to be ......... 2,673,686 +/- <326,394>
-
Quick and dirty answer - 2, 666,666. No time to write more. Have to go recheck my count.

That's easy; exactly 2,500,000 chips. How do I know, well I wrote a little macro and I no longer designate a design for a part,I just designate how many chips I want. So I kept adding chips starting at '1' chip(I should have known there was more than one) and all of a sudden I was up to 2.5 million and the part looked exactly like the one in the photo. So,I'm right.-Keith

My guess is 2,348,197 assumming it is only the chips visible in the photograph field-of-view. Now who in their right mind would count each and every chip? Can we ask for a re-count, because I am sure there are some hanging chips-on-chips (chads) that will break off as the chips are handled and skew the count higher.

Hello To all,
the number is 2,755,650
-
My question if the cutter cuts an already cut chip does that count as one or two, but then the answer is real answer is obvious. The real answer is there is only one chip in the picture. BUT it was pointed out the answer is between 2-3 mil. Now I see the problem with my part making. I'm trying to cut once measure twice when I should just cut several million times and the piece will be a perfect match. Gee, I need the Grex so I can randomly cut til I get it right ;-)
2,670,035 (I quite trying to make the part after this number of attempts)

2,004,990

2,499,999

now is someone gonna actually count this or just simply calculate based on the length of the program and the number of teeth in the cutter ect.. ect.. cause Im not comfortable unless every chip is hand counted.
2,132,006
-
My guess is 2,999,999,999. ;)

of all those chips. ::)
But If some one did count of all those chips, That person is a braver person than I. :-X
Or just needs to get a life. :D

Guys I have actually read every post to see whats being guessed and some good laughs are to be had! But I got to say I counted a few dozen guesses not actually between 2 and 3 mill??? Those of you may want to redo those guestimations.

I can see 2,500,000 but some might say 2,500,001 if you count that little chad over on the left. Use the 2,500,000 anyway , please check my current postal address before sending winnings.
-
hmmm...
has to be an easy number to remember,
otherwise there would be either;
sticky notes all over the place, or
somebody recounting everytime they forgot the number
so, my [undeucated] guess is
2,345,678
next, problem...
if I actually win,
I don't have anything _worth_ putting these on..:)

I just read 'The Secret' & I believe (stringly & confidently) that the number of chips is 2,785,136. I've already emailed Oprah to tell her about my win - that's how confident I am. Please forward my prize to me by UPS asap.
In the event of you incorrectly counting the chips & not realising that I have won I am sending Oprah to correct you. - DON'T RISK IT !

my guess would be a confirmed 2,678,469. No need for anymore guesses.

Taking the mean of the guesses of myself, my wife my daughter, and my father-in-law and given the amount of time it would take the average person to loose sanity and start drooling on the shop floor from trying to count all those chips, the result comes to 2443620.625 rounded up to the nearest whole number is 2,443,621. So there you go 2,443,621 no question. By the way, we would all like to know how you yourself came to a figure of how many chips are there, and at which mental institution did they treat you after you were finished? ;D

I see a definite pattern in the way the chips have fallen and taking into account the wind factor caused by the rotation of the machine that cut these chips and the atmospheric conditions in the ionosphere directly above said machine I am in no doubt that the total number of chip including the very small ones is 2,726,841

HI, I just finished making my machine look the same and so I can categorically tell you that the weight of metal is 2lb 1.25oz and the number of chips is 2,634,772. I assume that at the end of the competition you will post a photo showing all the chips laid out in a straight line so we can count 'em and verify the result........ ;) Ian

You make mention that if someone gets it right you will stop us all and tell us then. If this fails to happen then on the 29th you will pick the closest person. Now during all that you make mention that it is one entry per person but we are allowed to come back and edit our entries right?
Here is the 64chip question.... How often are you looking at all the answers and recording who picked what number? is this done hourly/daily/weekly/once per leapfrog year?
I need answers the counting is making my braing turn into something like green mint jelly!

Based on the volume of the material left (ML) and making an assumption of the size of the material at start (MS). Then applying the formula..... WTF = MS-ML... and facturing in what appears to be a single flute spiral upcut end mill (EM) and the speed of the mill (RPM) factured be the feed of the tool (FR) WTF = MS-ML/EM X RPM/FR The final answer is WTF = 2,363,673 ???

Assuming there are 3056 chips per square inch, and the bed is 72" x 12" and approx 1" deep, that would make 720 square inches @ 3056 per square inch
Plus a few thousand on the floor I reckon 2,219,320

That's easy: 2,000,870

Hi For my first post into this great fourm is: 2,643,415

WOW, I'm glad all of those chips aren't on someones shoulder. Now, THAT would be BAD.
I did some quick calculations using a secret formula in an Excel spreadsheet and came up with 2,607,080 chips! (And then modded it to conform to the hints)
And not one chocolate chip in the bunch. At least there aren't any buffalo chips, either!!!
Great fun, thanks all,
