Title: Another Chiron FZ12 being rebuilt
Post by: Rudker on March 05, 2014, 02:07:29 AM
I found a Chiron FZ12 S that has been standing under a roof.

The machine has been there for about 6 years as the original set up parameters have been lost and the local support for the older machines does not exist.

The unit was built in 1987 and commissioned on the 39th of May 1988 here in South Africa.

I found the original user manual inside with the original paper tape with the set up data on it.

I will be removing the Sinumerik controller and installing a CSMIO unit as per the work done by Hood on his machine.

I want to use the original Siemens motors and the Siemens servo controllers.

Looking forward to seeing some pics , will be interesting to see the progress as well.
I have recently been conversing with a guy from Poland that has also done a FZ12 with the CSMIO/IP-A but his has the pallet changer table. He also kept the original Siemens motors/drives and I would have also if that had been an option.

Looks great doesnt seem to have done much work at all as the arms are free from chips and coolant etc. Mine was worked hard and put away dirty but still after all these years it is tight and accurate, so yours will be the same :)

The machine stood still for about 6 years as they couldn't get it to work.

Suspect it stood for a while before then too.

I removed the motor and the splines are all clean and smooth, no wear where the splines mat with the spindle.

I have seen these manuals before but as it is an operating manual I didnt think it would contain any info that would be of use to me. As I have totally retrofitted the Chiron I would think the only manual that would be of use to me would be one which contained part drawings.
However maybe I am misunderstanding what that manual is, is that the same as the one you have with the part drawings?

So, managed to fall off a ladder has put a damper on the progress of getting the machine back home.

I did manage remove the parts from it before the accident.

I had managed to remove the servo drive, the sinumerik controller and the pneumatics and cylinders.

The servo was connected to a 50VAC supply and switched on.
The reason for this was to recharge the caps. If they have been unpowered for a long time, then it is best to reform the caps applying lower power for a while before putting full voltage onto them

I let it stand like that for about an hour.

I then connected servo drive to the transformer and applied the 165VAC so that the DC voltage on the capacitors was about 288VDC.  All the leds came on and the fans hummed away happily.

The sinumerik was also switched but the HT coil on the screen is making buzzing noises, so that is dead.
The leds also come on too.

The pneumatics is another story.
The valves are faulty as the rubber seals have perished, so I will be buying a solenoid set to replace the original set.

I might get to the machine next week to take off the panels and have them all painted.

So, after a long rest getting the feet sorted I managed to get some more work done on the machine.

Removed some of the covers and had them shot blast. Painted them with base coat tonight.

Also removed the tool changer and cleaned it all up.

Replaced the bottom lip seal on the spindle.

So all looking clean and neat.

Morning Hood,
On the spindle tool changer there is a lip seal that keeps the spindle clean.

It fits onto the end of the tool changer sleeve. The sleeve moves up and down on the spindle, on the bottom there is a seal. This cleans the chips and coolant off the spindle assembly when a tool is changed.

It was cheap, maybe 2 pounds.

On page 13 of the mechanical manual.
AS 100-110-7-10

It is the seal on the bottom of the tool changer case

Ah ok, thanks for that, it was just when you said a lip seal I was wondering as I think that is a wiper seal.
