Works in progress / Re: Three Page Lathe Screen
« on: December 13, 2016, 10:50:47 AM »
Fred,
Install per instructions and also install #22 and #24 lathe files shown in the first post of this thread.

THEN just copy the attached #24latheY.lset file to the Mach3 directory.

The attached screen set has the Y axis instead of A.
You need to create a new bitmap to change the "Zero World A" button says to
show Zero World "Y".
The button as is will work for the Y but you really should change what it shows.

Bob,
For ABC you can index or have it rotate degrees for some time using gcode . Mach3 dose not provide for continuous ABC rotation as there can only be one spindle. Spindles are configurable. Swap axis can be used but what your swapping needs to be the same in configuration since the swap only changes configured pin outs and then  one or the other is not being used. I guess one could manually turn the 4th axis motor on / off and  have it run continuously, but, it's not automated or controlled.

InTurn 4th Axis can do it but suggest you go to the site and see what is required and how it's done.

Now as you mentioned, there are other external motion devices  available that can provide the feature and more, BUT, not cheap and may require purchased software to program the motion device.

Mach4 has additional features but requires an external motion control device, and frankly I have not been following the development of it.

That's the story in a nut shell if I got  it right.

FWIW,
Folks see some video and think they should be able to do what they are seeing not realizing what is required to do it.

Thought someone might have an undocumented word parameter for setting the XMode in Mach3 .
Diameter parameter can be 0 ( Radius)  or 1 (Diameter), BUT, I couldn't come up with  scripting  to change the parameter value.
SO

Is it possible to do?  Don't think so!

Bob,
Thanks for your experience and reply.

BUT

Mike needs to provide the information requested to get the proper responses associated  to what he is seeking to do.
Not much more one can say.

Would like to change the XMode in lathe from or to Radius or Diameter via button script without going into configuration> Turn Options.

Is it possible?

General Mach Discussion / Re: Axis calibration

Backlash, screw mapping, whatever, is just a software attempt  at making something mechanically inferior right.
I never used the screw mapping feature and don't know how well it works. Most can't measure basklash  let alone
profile a complete axis movement. It's tedious work ..... spent a day profiling  a 40' long mill bed be one time!
Took a week to level the stupid thing.

You could use whatever value that gives you an improved accuracy. An average value would just blend the extremes of the backlash.
If your going to use a bunch of different measurements then square each value, add each squared value ( sum), and take the square of the sum.

One has  what they have, and if it's not to their spec, then they just need to improve the components or make the machine right.

A is a rotary axis ( ie; index or linear). I believe you would want to change the DRO and associated buttons for the Y.
Then gcode could be more conventional for using the motorized tailstock.

What is the file called and where can i find it

What file are you talking about?

Fred,
The screen set has X,Z,A . You can change the A, and what ever buttons etc. are related to A, to Y axis rather easily in the screen editor.
May consider running Mach version of 3.043.062  .

I have modified the Three Page Screen Set a lot, to my liking, and continue to modify it adding with all kinds of stuff.
I use a quick change for my lathe ( drill holes using the Z via a drill mounted in a holder ) and added tool probing in the setup screen to find the lathe center, populate and manipulate the tool table, etc.
Enchanced most of the screens, added wizards and in particular the threading, drilling and the conversational screen which can do a bunch of things.
Ie; Probe for points on a piece and create a dxf file of them.  I attached some screen shots of the set.

then simply put in your findings in backlash compensation and your good to go.

Just a comment,
Different parts of a screw can have different backlash.
So if you are using  part of the screw then you can refine the backlash settings to that part and when cutting a circle
is can be of better accuracy. Remember that BC is not perfect and has it's limitations in use.

assume I'm a six year old

You have a horn button in your car and when you press it the horn beeps.
The reason it beeps is because when the button is pressed there is "some magic" done to make the horn beep.

Mach has lots of buttons available and when you press one "some magic" is done to tell the software to do something. When you are typing you hit a button or key on the keyboard and magically the letter or number you pressed appears on the screen.
Just as a keyboard has a letter or number assigned to a key, each button in Mach has a code number assigned to it. In Mach Turn there is a button called
Zero World X and the code button code is 34. There is "some magic" associated with that button, namely when pressed, it executes some special instructions
( via VB code / scripting ) to the software to do something, namely;
- SetMachZero (0)
- call SetDro (0,0)

Study much my little Grasshopper and in time you will understand more. :D
You can create a macro, which is a collection of a bunch of scripting in one file and it could be called m1050.m1s.
So you could create a macro for the button 34 scripting.
You could also assign a HotKey in Mach such that when you prss a key on the keyboard it will be the same as clicking the button on the screen.
But one would need to read the Macro Programmers Refernce Manual and Using Mach3 Turn Manual along with learning scripting and to add change the screen learn to use one of the screen editors.Just thought I would mention the above and as the years go by you can learn all about what was said. Go now Grasshopper and find deeper meaning in what was said.  ;)

I'm just too dense to "get" it.

Not really as the instructions are lacking not very good.
Seems like you can create / assign a button and it's associated macro in Mach.
then define that in the XHC.
OR
Can just use one of Mach's OEM codes, scripting may be internal to Mach.
OR
Create scripting using M200 to M215 to turn a relay condition of on / off via
a output from a pin in Mach configuration.
but don't know what breakout board they are talking about or if it even applies.
But not sure about the key part, or if your limited to just two button codes,
etc. etc, and would need to play with an XHC. I don't have one.
Maybe if we saw all the configuration screens and what options in the pulldowns are available as that may shed some light on use.
Any of my logic on use of the XHC is probably not correct.

Have fun playing with it,

RICH
