General Mach Discussion / Re: pulley ratio ,feedrate and motor tuning
« on: April 03, 2015, 06:23:43 PM »
Fred,
As the stepper rpm increases the torque decreases. What you want is power which is speed x torque.
So the power part of the curve is somewhat subjective / over a usefull or wanted range of rpm.
The current needs to be limited to the stepper as too much current will overheat the motor and can cause damage.
Increasing voltage can increase stepper rpm. All steppers are not the same in rating and preformance.
Usualy a curve is supplied with the stepper which shows a graph of torque available to rpm at some voltage. Very seldom do you see multiple graphs at different voltage ratings. The curve gives you a starting range for tuning, but, one still needs to adjust settings for max reliability. ( just a comment....if you spin the steppers shaft at various speeds it will generate a voltage
and interesting enough that voltage at some point will come to a max no matter how fast you turn it)

On my Sherline 400 approx in oz are used and on the small Atlas lathe 500 in oz are used. The 500 's have that rating at 3A & 36 volts. They can be on / idle  all night and never get hot and never get hot when in use, warn in use , but not hot.

I have mine such that the gear raito is about 2.5:1 with the smaller pulley on the stepper. So the stepper speed is increased
at a loss of some torque but the torque delivered to the screw is increased by the pulley ratio. So the axis delivered power is somewhat max. Yet for the X axis it is directly driven, but, the screw a good pitch such that adequate resolution
is avialable. It's all a tradeoff in the end.........

I would suggest you go to the Gecko site as they some very good info on steppers. Also you may want to look at the
thread I did  about the Atlas lathe conversion. If I recall correctly, info was posted about motor torque and anticipated preformance of the lathe.

A stepper can skip steps and you may never know it, but, usualy you can hear the skipped steps,  if loss of stepping is significant the axis behavoir will be  ........one of where it goes nobody knows...... control is lost or return to a position is no longer correct.

Thus for a stepper system RELIABLITY is important. Better to run the axis slower and accurately with repeatablity than
high speed  / feedrate.

So, you the operator, learns what YOUR lathe is capable fo doing for different maching tasks, etc.

How much torque do you need.........well , enough to power the axis , some spare torque for reliabily, enough for
a resonable  acceleration, and finaly enough to do the machining task. There are programs that can calculate all that,
but, stiil experince and judgement will be used by the  manufacturer in the final sizing.

Done rambling.....hope this helped,

RICH

Tangent Corner / Re: Screw lube
« on: April 03, 2015, 07:19:14 AM »
Good general question but not a simple one to answer. So will give some background info relative to the
question.

Years ago at school a manditory course in Tribology was reguired. And later on took a company course in
lubrication which was taught by one of our company specialists.
What this dude learned was:
Didn't know how stupid I was until venturing into a discipline of a specialist discipline.  :D

FWIW.....
Selection of a lubricant is application specific. The lubricant properties must satisfy design conditions.
(The conditions are more than just temperature or say a max  viscosity). The physical characteristics of two different lubricants can seem equal at first, but just one composition difference can be rule one out over the other
( ie; compatablity with say a seal material or inertness). So the lubricant can be petrolium based / synthetic/ is in a class based on how formulated/ basic makeup/additives (ie;type/ thicknes) /viscosity, etc. Then design conditions can be max and min operating conditon/ shear rate / let us not forget cost..../oxidation stability, fire resistance / enviroment/
primary use, etc. So it an get complex quickly depending on the big picture.

So try to picture a list of all the lubricants manufactured today by all the different manufactures along with respective
applications inclusive of basic makeup and desired design conditions. ???

Don't know what grease is.....sorry no answer.  ;)

General Mach Discussion / Re: wizards and feedrate per rev
« on: April 02, 2015, 06:23:54 AM »
Generaly,

Modify the button script so that it codes G95 instead of G94.

Operator>Edit Button Script, select Post Code button, look thru the script and change accordingly

You can have wizards, done by different people, which do the same task and but the scripting varies ie; some default to your configuration, so provide choice of feed mode, some don't, some don't allow modification of the script.........so need to look at the scripting.

General Mach Discussion / Re: lathe threading
« on: April 02, 2015, 05:55:18 AM »
Axle,
See page 47 in Threading on The Lathe  write-up for how to change the M0176 macro. Just provides option to how the code is posted ie; G32 or G76.  Using the G32 will alow easier monitoring of the threading passes. Using g32 or g76
will not fix your problem.

Read the write-up as there are a number of things that account for having problems with threading.
- Mach Version
- Computer Pulse frequency
- Spindle slowdown / Inadequate motor power
- Exceeding axis velocity and acceleration settings for thread to be done
- etc , etc all in the write up

Mach3 under Vista / Re: 3020T and Win10 64 bit
« on: April 01, 2015, 06:45:44 PM »
Sometimes things are not as simple as one may think.
I would believe that if Mach could work with 64 bit systems it would have been done already.
So it's not lazy or belligerent, but, rather something one must accept!

Heck create your owne controller if you truely believe it can be done......

Axle,
I would suggest that you have a read of Threading On The Lathe write up which is in Members Doc's.

Make sure you are using at least version .037 . Major problem with threading is a user taxing his lathes ability.

General Mach Discussion / Re: backlash and slaved axis
« on: April 01, 2015, 06:46:41 AM »
Are you using a SS?
Have not used mine in a long time, but at that time, BC didn't work with the SS.
Haven't kept up with what is going on with the SS.
If yes then that may be the problem.

If no then..........

Did you try with low settings as suggested?

Put a piece of tape extending out like a flag on the coupling so you can watch what is happening or not happening.
Increase the backlash ( even if not correct ) to a larger amount so there is time to watch the axes and no need for an indicator.

If you have never used BC before you may want try BC on an axis which is not slaved and then you will know
how the settings affect the backlash and what to look for.

I am just curiuos if or how well BC works for a slaved axis since never tried it here. Note that BC is done when there is a change in direction.

Don't have any other suggestions.
