this might not help you but it is something to think about.last month my machine started to flip out doing weird stuff when running mach.
the cause was the hard drive was starting to crash.it started doing the occasional then got worse.made a image of the drive and transferred it
to a new drive.have you noticed your computer slow booting or slow loading?

have you tried to reset your mother board by pulling the battery out and waiting 10 min.
go into cmos at boot select use default setting and nothing else then reboot.use safe mode when windows comes up it should reconfig a few things.this will assign a new loading order to the drivers.don't use the select high perf setting in cmos until later.good luck!

uninstal mach3 - delete mach 3 folder - go to device and uninstall prnt and com ports - shut down - unplug
snatch the battery out of the motherboard for about 10 min.
load the default settings then look your cmos settings over.
restart and let win find the ports - make sure they all come back.
then put mach back

Ian,
here is the photos ... you can see the lost steps on 2 spots.
forget about the dimple, it's a hole on the next cut.

as you can see the Z /edge is very smooth/no loosing steps
that looks like you are missing the code to take out the material.or maybe it is jumping that section of code.
