Pokeys with step/dir spindle
« on: March 07, 2014, 03:16:34 PM »
I have a pokeys 56U (and ethernet pokeys).

Using the 56U at the moment on my mill.
Using 25 kHz integrated pulse engine.
I have a c6 step/dir board, thats is connected to the VFD (and has fwd/rev relays. Works very well).

I am trying to drive the c6 from pokeys.

I have spindle drive enabled, and port 10 signals 42/43 connected from pokeys to the C6 board.
Spinndle enabled in ports and pins.

The step dir settings are 10/42 and 10/43.
I dont see output changing in pokeys, when I try to put on the spindle.

My pokeys work, jogging works, and both MPG1 and MPG2 work well.

JOGGING works VERY WELL with tweo dedicated MPGS (x and y).

I just need to get the spindle to turn on.

? Any idea .. what am I missing ??

To deal with delays in the transferring and processing of data, PoKeys must handle the step/dir signals generation by itself, which makes the 'LPT simulation' obsolete. PoKeys is not the LPT port extension and has nothing to do with Port 10 in Mach3.
Unfortunately, integrated pulse generator is limited to generating pulses for 3 axes (hardware limitations). In order to use additional axes, external pulse generator (e.g. PoKeysCNCaddon) must be used.
Can you drive the spindle with one of the axis step/dir signals?

Please tell me how to do this ?
Ie how do I tell pokeys one axis is the spindle ?

So that M3/M4 works, and I can run a spindle at commanded speed.

I am only using 3 axis, and might get a fourth.
Any axis is fine for me.

OR, DO you mean I cannot use pokeys hw pulse engine, at all, if I need step/dir for the spindle ?
So, then there is NO way to get the VFD to work ?
If so, this is a major disappointment.

I really, really hope there is a workaround.
I am willing to buy any piece needed.

I REALLY like the MPGs.
They are the reason I am using the Pokeys.

hanermo, as I stated, internal pulse generator can support up to 3 axes (or step/dir outputs). Pulses must be generated at high frequencies and these can not be achieved without specific hardware in the PoKeys.

We released the support for the external pulse generator lately - it both increases the axes count to 8 axes and increases the maximum step frequency to 125 kHz. At the moment, we only offer the board with full external pulse generator support (PoKeysCNCaddon), but we will be adding 'lite' versions in a few months. On the last page of the PoKeys pulse engine manual, there is a schematic on how to build a 4-axis external pulse generator by yourself for a few $ using off-the-shelf parts.

Regarding spindle configuration - unfortunately, I don't have knowledge on using Mach3 with lathes.

So, will the Pokeys CNC addon allow me to use a spindle with step/dir ?

I am happy to buy one.

I bought the PoKeysCNCaddon v1.0.
Hope to get it soon, and it allows me to use the spindle with pokeys.

I checked and your order has not been shipped yet, so, please describe your system. I must point out that threading is not supported by PoKeys.

I just want to use a step/dir spindle on a mill.

So that the spindle speed is changed through step/dir signals.
This will allow me to use a servo motor as a spindle in the future.

At the moment, this is set up with a C6 bob, that then outputs 0-10V signal to VFD.

The spindle was (old) used with PP effectively, with a PP, and the signals set up in mach3 posrts/pins.
Worked very well.

Spindle is Bridgeport M-Head.
VFD is Hitachi L200, 2.2 kW (current limited suitably).

Mill is scratch built by me in steel, linear guides, ballscrews. 2000 kg. Resolution and repetability better than 0.01 mm.
Works very well.
Table is 1600 mm wide in steel.
Grin.

Pokeys are used for MPGs. I have 2 currently connected, and will put on as many as the sw will allow (3 afaik).

So, spindle will be used as 4-th axis? This should work properly.

How does the 8 axis system work in mach3? I am very interested in doing this with some slaved axis' 8 would be the perfect number for me.
X axis
Y axis with Slaved
Z axis
A rotary axis with Slaved
B linear axis
C linear axis
Can you tell me if this is possible? Each slave could be homed independent?
