Title: Help and advise please
Post by: chucketn on April 27, 2017, 12:07:55 PM
New member here. I have built an Arduino based controller for a rotary table, an am now exploring the possibility of building a CNC router/engraver. A friend on here built a system from surplus medical equipment.

I found a listing for 4 axis controller, including steppers on e-bay, and would like an honest opinion of it. I know next to nothing about CNC, but am a retired computer tech and hobby machinist, so I think I can figure it out.

Would those familiar with the hardware look at this listing and advise if it is a good deal?

It is my understanding the above referenced kit comes with MACH3.

Also, anyone know of a 3 or 4 axis mechanical setup that I could apply this kit to? I have a very limited budget, so re-building cheap surplus equipment is the idea.

I would even consider a previously loved setup if you have upgraded. Thanks in advance for any help.

It either has the freely available demo version, or a pirated license. Mach3 alone is $175.

I would not recommend it, unless you are building a very small machine driven directly with belts. It won't spin those motors fast enough for a screw driven machine

If you want to build a machine, buy the motors and electronics last, so you'll have a better idea of what you need.

Thanks Gerry. Your comments make sense.
In getting started, I would only be cutting foam or wax for casting patterns.
In looking at the mechanics, where should I start for something to learn with and build on?
