Why the black screens?

OK this is a serious question.  I'm not having a dig at anyone. 

I have just picked up a second hand touch screen for my router and want to put together a custom screen.

Both Hood and Zealouse have kindly posted screens suitable for touch screens.  Thanks for the efforts.

However both have things that I don't need and are missing things I want.  So I want to either modify or start from scratch.

Now to my question. Is there a reason that they have both gone for a gray to black theme?

Is this color scheme easier to see in a range of ambient light conditions?  Or is it just a style thing?

Yeah it's funny that most of the screens are gray and black.
I'll have a ton of screen here in just a bit that you can easely change the color's and apply diffrent effects and textures and will have diffrent theme's.
Will also have graphics you can easely drag and drop into Screen 4.
Pormise they be more than gray and black

Well, just my ¢.02, the dark backgrounds with bright letters/numbers are high contrast. Easy on the eyes. Good looking stuff there, zealous.
