Can someone explain how hot keys work?
I have a remote that I cant seem to get to work
but I wonder how the hot keys work without a remote.
in the box X++ and others I have no code

Click the box that says x++ for example and push the key you want to use to jog the x + and that sets the key.  Be aware though, there are default hotkeys and you dont want to have the same key assigned to 2 functions, that can cause problems.
