Art/Brian
Is Q to be step/direction, analog
??
Will this open the doors to the many different kinds of servo motors available?

We hand picked the testers based on the machine that they are running and so on... We have all the data that we need at this point but I can tell you that there will be more!
Quantum is step and direction OR analog... you can pick by what you run for a motion controller! I have a Galil running in a FULL closed loop on the mill that I have been testing and I have been running tests from the printer port as well. So as you can see there are many levels that you can work at
Now for the test that I ran today... It is a Thermwood router that runs at about 800IPM X and Y and 200IPM in the Z axis. the Accel under mach3 was set to be at about 50 in/sec^. This was nice and liked the way that it run, but if you ran a path that had a fast revers it would make bad niose. With Quantum loaded I was able to run 150in/sec^2 Accel! WOW is all I have to say... It looked like the Fanuc mills that we have at work moving into position! Stig and I had to ride on the table to feel the Accel .... it was UNREAL how smooth it was! We need to start the adaptive process of setting the Jerk amount before we can release this for testing, but I think that most of you will see faster accels and deccels with Quantum. There is one tester that has not gotten back to me that will be testing a Stepper mill to see if it makes it run any faster... I will tell you more as soon as he gets back to me
Thanks and have a Great X-Mass!

Brian,
I have a X145.75" by Y142.75" by Z8" router running huge 5,239 Oz in setppers, moving a 300+lb gantry. Im able to rapid my X axis at 800ipm, Y axis at about 1400ipm, but at those speeds its a hit or miss, so I just set the rapid speed at 500ipm, which is good enough for me.
If you need testers for such a machine, just say the word.

Hey Fellas,
I hate to sound like such a dunce but here goes anyway...
What do you mean when you say, "Shake the table" & Jerk? Are you talking about the gantry movement caused by a reversal/change of direction?
Also, since it sounds like Printer Ports are 'sun-setting', what are the you thinking for output? USB? Ethernet? Is that why you Dudes are referring to G100?
So, let's say I wanted to use Quantum, could I still use My Gecko 202's?
I know these questions are like Orville & Wilbur talking to Chuck Yeager but we all gotta start somewhere
Thanks & Happy X-mas

Hello Sid,
Good questions!
The Shake and Jerk that we are talking about is what you get if you have the Accel set to high on your system. For example the router that I was testing with is about 2000 LB Just in the X axis! Mach 3 could only run the mill with 50in/sec^2 accel but with the scurving I could get an accel of 150in/sec^2. Mach3 could not use that accel in a program because the motors would over shoot and fault. But the Scurve made the motors change direction nice and smooth. A good test would be to program a box that is .2 (in) square at max feedrate. you should hear a bang or have lost steps on a stepper system. IF you were to set your jerk to about 1000 you would no longer have the bang at the end of the move... Makes for a much better tool path
Quantum will still run the printer port under XP and 2000. Vista on the other hand is OUT! If you are going to run Vista you will need to to run an NCPod,G100,Galil or Delta tau controller.
So yes you could use your 202's
Hope that helped
Brian

Thanks Brian, Yes that makes sense now.
OK, so basically it's a "need for speed". Faster Accel rates, Faster Velocities. It's great that you guys are working it up like that!
Thanks,
Sid
P.S. HEY FERNANDO How about posting photo of that 800lb Gorilla Router you mentioned!

Ill try and convince the guy I designed it with to let me post the pictures though.
He is not as kind as most of the people in this forum.

Well it is more the need for smoother high speed accelerations... This mode would be good for a machine that had to move a liquid and not turn it into a wave pool
I will have to take some video of how it works at some point...

We are working on getting the code finished but we are trying to get better 3d motion
Art and I have a few ideas that we are playing with and it should make quantum run 3D files with .001 moves much faster. There is so much to work on and so little time
