Hi there!
Is it possible to install MACH3 in a laptop using a USB cable?

I have installed MACH3 in a PC using a parallel port, and works fine. Now, I am trying to use a laptop to drive my machine with MACH3, is this possible?
If so, where do I look for instructions to do this?

Only if you use one of the external motion controllers that work with Mach, SmoothStepper and KFlop are the two most common.

I've just got a smoothstepper and intend to use it on a laptop via usb.
Should I install mach3 with the mach 3 drivers?

Yes, you can use a laptop to control Mach3 with a SS.
You don't need to install the Parallel port driver.
