Power supply question

 Hello,

I am having trouble with the availability of the Dugong drives. Mine have been on order since March, but they do have the Whales in stock.

The power supply transformer in my Hurco now is  60 volts x ( 1.414 bridge rectifier) = 84.84 volts output.

The servo motors are 90VDC, 20A peak & 12A continuous.


Dugong drives are 160v & 35A.

The Whales are 80v & 20A.

Is there any way I could drop my power  supply down a few volts and use the Whales?

Or, do I really need the Dugongs because of the servos  increasing the current  during  coast down?

There is a braking resistor they have specifically  for the Whale & Dugong.

This is just a thought I'm knocking around to get my retro started. I would like to get the dirty work out of the way  before the weather starts getting too hot.

Plus the Whales are $70 each cheaper than the Dugongs.

If it was me, the only way it can be done is adding some high power diode in series.

You will get about 0.7v in voltage drop per diode.

For the amount in savings on the drives would it be feasible to buy/build a new power source?
Would the 5+ volts really make that big of a difference of the performance on the servos?

If your power supply is running on 220 V you can cut the voltage in half by running it on 110 V I run my Gecko servo drives that way works fine my machine has large servo motor's.

How would that affect  the performance? The servos are rated at 90vdc and I am running 85vdc.  If It was cut in half that would leave 42.42vdc.

I run my machine at 45 V runs fine depends on how fast you want to run the cutter for small cutter's you can't run them to fast so you realy won't notice any difference on my machine the servos are 120 V

Jackal, have you looked at the Granite drives, I seem to remember they have higher volt options although they are maybe a bit more costly?

I have never used them but can only recall good things about them. Other good thing is they can also drive BLDC (reduced current if I recall) but could be a good option if thinking of upgrading the motors in the future.

I have checked with Rutex, Granite,  They won't return e-mails or answer the phone. Gecko hasn't replied back yet on the email.

 Are people really that busy and can't return calls or e-mails concerning sales?

It seems that you save up your money & do a lot of research for a retro, and nobody wants your business.

I hope the rest of my retro goes easier.
