when i purchased my mill it had a liciensed older version on it. everything is working good on it and if i upgrade the version am i opening up a can of worms? just dont want to loose anything.

Should be fine but a good idea would be to either copy the whole Mach3 folder over to another location or at least save your licence file and xml and if using custom macros or tool tables/fixture offsets, custom brains or screensets if you have any.
