I want to use an index pulse with my lathe.
I don´t have alot of experience about this and would appreciate some help.

This is the "component" i´m using... http://www.everlight.com/upload/product_pdf/ITR8102.pdf
I´ve connected it to the breakout board MB-02 on the smoothstepper and
get a correct reading in between ALOT of "jitter".

How do i get rid of this jitter?
Do i need pull-up or pull-down resistors?
Someone told me that the index pulsel MUST be active low, is this true?

As it is now i believe the signal is active high since i use an index disc with a slot once/turn!

Afraid I cant help regards your specific opto but I can tell you that it is not true that you need active Low for it, all 4 of my machines that use the SS have the Index active High.
