M98 command and Lxx statement (repeats)

Hi,

I'm unable to find a M-language reference manual (complete).
I would like to know how many repeats can stand a Lxx parameter (calling a subroutine by M98 command) ?

Example :

O1000
[main program G-code statements]
M98 P2000 L500;

O2000
[sub routine G-code statements]
M99

Here I put 500, but what is the maximum allowed ?
